Why Carbon Fiber Machining is Different

Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites present unique machining challenges unlike metals or plastics. The combination of carbon fibers embedded in a polymer matrix creates anisotropic stock material properties — strength varies by fiber orientation. Conventional machining techniques cause delamination, fiber pull-out, and rapid tool wear.

Nelotiv facility uses diamond-coated and carbide tooling specifically designed for composite materials. Controlled feed rates and spindle speeds prevent heat buildup that damages the resin matrix. Advanced dust collection systems capture hazardous carbon fiber particles, ensuring safe working conditions and clean finished parts.

1
Delamination Risk
Improper cutting forces separate fiber layers, weakening structural integrity.
2
Tool Wear Acceleration
Carbon fibers are abrasive, requiring diamond or specialized carbide tools.
3
Heat Sensitivity
Coolant and controlled speeds essential. Polymer matrix degrades above 180°C.

Custom Layups

FORM-C

Ply-by-ply engineered layups with fiber orientation matched to the load path. Used when off-the-shelf stock cannot deliver the required directional stiffness or weight budget. We partner with certified layup facilities; post-cure machining is performed in-house.

Hybrid Composites

FORM-D

Carbon fiber interleaved with glass or aramid plies. The CF plies carry stiffness; the secondary fiber controls cost, impact tolerance, and fail-safe behavior. Useful where carbon's brittle fracture mode is a design concern.
