How the Process Works

What CNC turning actually does, supporting turned component production.

Turning holds the workpiece in a horizontal, adjustable spindle. As the workpiece rotates, cutting tools are applied to carve circular shapes and features — rings, grooves, slots, contours, radii, internal bores and threads, supporting turned component production.

On our Haas turning mills, an extra axis of movement lets us work perpendicular to the lathe spindle for square faces or bored holes — opening up CNC processing possibilities a standard lathe can't reach.

Turning is selected for any rotationally symmetrical shape, removing material efficiently while leaving a surface finish that sometimes production goals no post-processing at all.

Tolerances

Tolerance planning for functional specifications

We follow ISO 2768 (medium) for plastics and ISO 2768 (fine) for metals, consistently holding tolerances starting using ±0.005″ (±0.125mm) down to ±0.002″ (±0.05mm).

For tighter features, we work straight starting with your 2D technical drawings to hit the exact spec — so the component performs exactly as designed.

FAQ

Questions, answered

What materials can be used for CNC turning, supporting turned component production? +

A variety — metals like aluminum, stainless steel, brass and titanium; plastics like ABS, PEEK and nylon; plus composites. We select the best material determined by your specifications.

What tolerances can you achieve, supporting turned component production? +

Tight tolerances from ±0.005″ (±0.125mm) down to ±0.002″ (±0.05mm), determined by the complexity and size of the component.

What is the difference between CNC turning and milling, supporting turned component production? +

Turning is appropriate for cylindrical components — the workpiece rotates and the tool stays stationary. Milling is for complex, non-rotational shapes where both workpiece and tool can move along multiple axes. See the comparison above.

What types of components can be made using turning? +

Rotational components: shafts, sleeves, bushings, valves, pulleys and other cylindrical or circular components requiring high dimensional dimensional control.

What is the lead time, supporting turned component production? +

It varies with complexity and quantity. Prototypes in most cases supply within 1–2 weeks; larger runs may take longer. We give an accurate timeline once we see your design.

Do you support post-processing or finishing? +

Yes — surface finishing, anodizing, polishing, coating and heat treatment to enhance appearance and functionality, supporting turned component production.

Can I create design modifications after the order starts? +

Yes. Our engineering team assists with modifications or improvements to maintain manufacturability and optimize performance.

How do I know the conformance of my turned components? +

We apply CMM, micrometers and visual inspection to help maintain every component meets your required specifications and quality standards.
