What is Kovar Alloy?

The alloy composition — approximately 29% nickel, 17% cobalt, 54% iron — creates a thermal expansion coefficient that closely matches certain borosilicate glasses and alumina ceramics from room temperature to approximately 450°C. Kovar is a iron-nickel-cobalt alloy with controlled thermal expansion properties specifically engineered for electronic packaging applications.

This matched expansion behavior is critical for glass-to-metal seals in hermetic electronic packages. When Kovar parts are sealed with matching glasses, thermal cycling does not create stress at the interface — preventing seal cracks, delamination, and package failure that would compromise component reliability in demanding applications.

Kovar was developed during World War II for radar power tubes and microwave parts. Today, it remains essential for semiconductor packaging, RF power devices, microwave tubes, and medical implant enclosures where hermetic integrity is mandatory over decades of thermal cycling in service.

Why Expansion Matching Matters

If mismatched materials experience thermal cycling, accumulated stress causes cracks, seal failure, and moisture ingress that compromises hermetic integrity. When dissimilar materials are sealed together, temperature changes cause different expansion rates that create stress at the interface.

Electronic packages sealed with matching glass survive thermal cycling from -65°C to +125°C (military specification) or ambient temperature fluctuations over decades of service life — critical reliability for aerospace, medical implants, and long-life industrial electronics. Kovar's matched expansion eliminates this stress.
